Tips for a Green Remodel for Your Kitchen

Do you want to "go green" when remodeling your home's kitchen? If you are planning an eco-friendly remodel, here are some tips to help you:

Go Green:

• Consider hiring "green" professionals.
• Consider what to do with removed materials. Consider reusing materials if applicable to other projects, resell, or donate.
• Choose your "green" materials. Look for products certified by The Greenguard Environmental Institute (www.greenguard.com), the Forest Stewardship Council (www.fscus.org), or Cradle to Cradle ( www.mbdc.com/c2c/).
• Look for eco-friendly substitute materials:
• Linoleum instead of vinyl
• Low or no-VOC paints
• Bamboo, cork, or reclaimed wood
• Choose Energy Star appliances.
• Use formaldehyde-free cabinetry or go for wood certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
• Install recycled-content glass countertops.
• Install a water filter as an alternative to buying bottled water.
• Utilize natural light with well-placed windows, skylights, and sun tunnels.
• Keep the refrigerator out of the sunlight and away from the oven.
